WATERSHED
a community cares for its land

A pond as fair as the heavens

These places form a transitional bridge between waterway and land.
I am like them – melding boundaries, filtering all, mediating the deluge, in flux, ignored.

We have a bond, wetlands and me. They share their atmosphere with me, and
I honor this bond by sharing their allure through images.

More about the project:  Sevilla has been interviewing and photographing preserve monitors, conservationists, planners, civic leaders; some of these interviews and portraits are part of the WATERSHED exhibit, which features approximately 200 images of local wetlands. The exhibit continues to travel, and an exhibit catalog has been published.  Her guidebook to local public access wetlands explains wetland value, gives maps and directions to wetland locations, and encourages stewardship of the land.  She is currently at work on another wetlands text, a volume of articles co-edited with an environmental scientist.

Art event opening receptions featured a new environmental coalition of conservationists, outdoor enthusiasts and artists, in a collaboration galvanized by an exhibit of photographic art; bringing this mix of groups together is the beginning of  valuable new synergies. A forum of leaders of conservation organizations was held for news media.  Presentations continue to give voice to wetland and conservation issues. THANATOPSIS (at luminguild.com) is the project's new direction-- an examination of the ruin caused by invasive species, in the forms of plants or humans.

Forum participants:

  • June Summers, President of the Genesee Valley Audubon Society and sponsor of WATERSHED
  • Jim Howe, Executive Director of The Central/Western NY Nature Conservancy
  • Gay Mills, Executive Director of the Genesee Land Trust
  • Caroline Myers, Executive Director of Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District
  • Andy Smith, Wetlands Committee chair for the Monroe County Environmental Management Council
  • Arlene Cluff, Board member of the Mendon Foundation
  • Sara Rubin, Chair of the Rochester Sierra Club wetlands committee
  • Ann Jones, League of Women Voters, providing a wetland demonstration
